Interior Dive Sites

From our West Kelowna dive centre location, we can be at a dive site in 15 minutes. For destinations like Pavilion or Johnson Lake, it  takes a couple hours driving. It’s not the Pacific Coast but but still fun to dive. Check out these pages to learn more about diving in our backyard!

dive book image copyThe interior lakes and rivers of British Columbia, provide a wide variety of fresh water diving opportunities. Wrecks, artifacts from days past, finds from recent times, walls, unusual geographical features, and a variety of fish and invertebrates….

Water temperatures vary from season to season with higher altitude lakes covered in ice from late fall into May. Okanagan Lake hasn’t frozen for many years, but we occasionally see ice formed along secluded shorelines in the winter.  Our best visibility is during the winter months and can be over 50ft – it’s just cold! Dry Suit diving is highly recommended for most months of the years. If you’re not trained in dry suits, take our three dive PADI Specialty course.

Serpent Aquatics is located on the western side of  Okanagan Lake in West Kelowna, and where we do most of our diving. The lake is approximately 344 m/1000 ft above sea level. For dive depth and bottom time calculations, we use SEA LEVEL for Okanagan Lake, and adjust computers when diving at higher altitude. The lake is approximately 232 m/780 ft at it’s deepest. There are currents in Okanagan Lake although not significant, but strong winds, lake surface conditions and changing weather can manifest into currents strong enough to make diving hard work.

A great publication “Diving Britsh Columbia Lakes and Rivers” by Bill Hall offers great information on many sites throughout the interior.

Canada “Fisheries and Ocean’ Hydrographic Charts”are available for Okanagan Lake
