FAQ

·          What is Scuba Stars

Serpent Aquatics created SCUBA STARS, a two-dive SASY program that combines fun and games with the development of skills required to participate in underwater scuba programs. The Scuba Stars "Adventure Book" provides education materials, outlines the two-dive sessions and provides information on other youth diving programs.

·         What is SASY?

SASY is the acronym for Supplied Air Snorkeling for Youth. It’s a scuba system consisting of a small High Pressure Air Cylinder, Regulator and Pressure Gauge, combined in a Floatation Vest.

·         What age do I have to be?

Kids ages five and over can use the SASY System. You should weigh at least 40 pounds/18 kilograms to properly fit the system. In most Community Centre Pools the age for participation is six.

  • How old is too old?

The SASY system will comfortably fit most kids up to their early teens. There is an adult version called SASA, or Supplied Air Snorkeling for Adults, so you're never too old to experience diving.

  • Do I have to be a good swimmer?

You should be comfortable in the water. The SASY system's buoyancy along with fins and mask make your SASY experience safe, easy and enjoyable.

  • Who provides the gear?

Serpent Aquatics supplies all diving equipment. All you need is your bathing suit and towel.

  • Who teaches SASY?

SASY is a sanction and insure activity provided by Scuba Diving Instructors with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI).

  • Are there health concerns with the use of SASY?

SASY divers float safely on the surface and do not go to the bottom of the pool. Colds, allergies, congestion or controlled asthma are not an issue with the use of SASY, as long as no attempts are made to descend beneath the surface. Parent/Guardians should discuss health concerns with the instructor prior to the SASY experience.

· What are the requirements to participate in a program using SASY?

Parents/Guardians must review, sign and hand in a Supplied Air Snorkeling Statement, Participant Record and Liability Release for each participant.

  • Is Scuba Stars a certification program?

No, Scuba Stars is a program that introduces youth to fundamental uses of scuba equipment. The program can determine a child's comfort level with scuba and is a good indicator to the child, their parents/ guardians and the dive instructor of whether the child can continue into other scuba programs.

  • What other courses can my child take?

To participate in a full scuba that allows you to breathe air at depth underwater, participants must be age 8 and over.

The PADI Bubblemaker Experience is for youth ages 8 and 9 and Discover Scuba Diving is for everyone age 10 and over.

The PADI Seal Team is for all youth ages 8 to 12+. Part 1 of this program is 5 dive sessions or Aquamissions, followed by Part 2 which is a variety of Specialty Aquamissions.
