Over the past 20 years or so, the old-fashioned circular masks have been replaced by the modern shape, and manufacturers have developed more ingenious ways to increase our angle of vision underwater - nevertheless, to varying degrees a mask will limit your vision.
TUSA's response to this problem has been to launch the Visio Tri-Ex - it's a three-window version of the existing Visio mask and provides a 168-degree panoramic view. This wide viewing angle is achieved by the mask's domed side windows and the reduction of frame structure around the lenses.
On our test dives the mask appeared to be lightweight, and the crystal silicone skirt felt soft and made an excellent seal against my face. The straps were extremely easy to adjust, as was the position of the strap around my head, thanks to the multi-angled adjuster that swivels on the frame. In the water, it let in large amounts of light, and the angle of view was pretty good. As I didn't have an accurate way of measuring this, I compared it with that of the fish-eye lens on my camera. The angle of vision appeared to be roughly the same, confirming TUSA's claims that this provides a very wide view.
One unforeseen benefit is that this mask can help keep you in better contact with your buddy, as the side-mounted windows give a panoramic view. This is somewhat distorted, though, making other divers appear a lot further away than they actually are. However, you soon get used to this, and for an instructor taking a group of students on a dive, it is ideal for keeping an eye on them. Finally, it looks good - so many masks squash your face, making you look like a chipmunk in a drainpipe. Thankfully, this mask doesn't. The Visio Tri-Ex is available in translucent silicone with aquamarine, black, cobalt blue, flash yellow, shark silver or translucent trim, as well as in plain black silicone with a black or red trim.
